Book Review

I have read a lot, A LOT, of books on pregnancy, infants, toddlers, and parenting. It is a subject that intrigues me. I love to learn about everything related to these topics, from the mental, emotional and spiritual to the physical and medical. I have put together a list of my favorites and listed some a “must have”. I hope you enjoy reading these and find them as invaluable as I have.

Pregnancy:
A Thinking Woman’s Guide to Pregnancy
Great for women who want to really know about the differences between natural childbirth and typical hospital births. It’s written very well, without hating on mother’s who choose medicated childbirth.
Birthing From Within
This is fantastic for women who are apprehensive about their deliveries, whether natural or medicated. Thought it was a little kooky at first, but the last 2/3 of the book was very helpful. Lots of personal birth stories, and written very positively.
What To Expect When You Are Expecting
This is “must-have” to keep on your bookshelf. There are several editions, so you’ll want to purchase the most recent. This is perfect for every pregnant mother if you ever have questions physically and medically during your 9 months of “bliss”.

Infancy:
Your Amazing Newborn
This would be a great baby shower gift. I loved the pictures. Not much text, but it was very interesting to read about what your infant can do physically. It really helped me connect to infants better when I learned about what they can really do as little people.
The Happiest Baby on the Block
Must, Must, Must have this one. If you implement the techniques in this book, you will never have to sit by and listen to your infant cry. Also, there are videos available and Certified Baby on the Block instructors in your area so you can take a class on how to calm your crying baby…. very, very cool.
What To Expect The First Year
Another “must-have” on your bookshelf. If you ever wonder what to do when this happens or that happens with your baby…any questions at all, this will help direct you to know what to do.

Toddlers and Parenting:
The Happiest Toddler on the Block
This book puts you in the mind of a toddler. It helps you see how these little “cavemen” think and feel and how they communicate. Which in turn, helps you communicate with them! I highly recommend this one. It will make your life much more peaceful.
Setting Limits
Also, “Setting Limits With Your Strong-Willed Child”. Pretty much self explanatory, very good for parents who want to have well behaved children without using yelling, corporal punishment, begging…etc. I like it because it uses respect to teach children and explains how parents should behave.
What To Expect: The Toddler Years
Same old reasons…use this book for any medical, emotional or physical questions you may have without calling a doctor or looking it up on the Internet. Very handy resource to have on your bookshelf.
